ALTAR MODERN

‘Altar Modern’ is a series of collages that act as a modernised response to the historical iconography of an Altarpiece, combined with elements of Nicolas Bourriaud’s Altermodern theory. Visually the series explores the iconic hand gestures found in Italian Renaissance art, alongside graphically form and composition of constructivism.

Post WW2, cheap materials were needed to rebuild buildings and structures so concrete, as it was affordable, became the material used to rebuild churches that had previously been constructed with more expensive materials. At first glance, the use of such a cheap material seems offensive to God, however over time concrete has developed its own aesthetic appeal and its properties have proven to create calm places of worship.

Through the use of material and form, Altar Modern displays the unlikely combination of the holy and ‘unholy’; whilst linking together the narrative of contrasting art movements from history in contemporary practice.
